This session includes an overview of one district’s multi-year journey towards global competency. This initiative targets a change in culture resulting in seeing, valuing, and embracing differences in support of student learning. One systematic strategy found to be useful is the development of the district’s multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework. Another is the ongoing collaboration of staff across grade bands; staff engage and work on teams while learning and exploring concepts. The intentional work on teams to embrace a growth mindset results in mutual respect and understanding of all stakeholders. Each person’s story evidences growth and development of the collective knowledge. As David Livermore said in his 2016 book Driven by Difference “Culturally intelligent innovation begins with changing our impulse from, 'why can’t you see it like I do?' to 'help me see what I might be missing'.” The district’s journey continues next year as awareness moves into action. Participants will engage in dialogue, Think-Pair-Share activities, and strategy planning.
