To prepare students for argumentative writing on the EOCs, I created a unit based on my learning from the Ohio Writing Project (OWP) and several professional development books including Texts and Lessons, The Journey Is Everything, and 180 Days.

Participants will be led through the process of annotating articles, creating claims, identifying reasons, constructing a counterargument, producing a rebuttal, blending sources, and organizing their thoughts into a cohesive multi-paragraph essay. After completing the practice essay, I then continue the unit with an argumentative research paper where we follow a similar process for students to complete independently.

I plan to provide several strategies that could be used in a multitude of writing genres and materials that you can photocopy and use the next year.
